The Science of the Strike 🧪

Sometimes the best fishing spots are found at the end of a long, dusty trail. Alif Fitry took the Senses Blackhell rod on a journey to explore these remote waters, seeking out fish that rarely see a lure. The portability and balance of the Blackhell make it the ultimate companion for the mobile angler. Upon reaching the water’s edge, Alif opted for the Senses Saviors 60s in a natural color pattern to match the local forage. A slow, rhythmic twitching retrieve was the key, making the lure dance through the water column and entice a strike from this stunning specimen.

Catching a fish of this caliber in such a tight environment requires a rod with a short, accurate casting stroke and a lure that starts working the moment it hits the water. The Saviors 60s did exactly that, and the Blackhell provided the "backbone" needed to win the tug-of-war. Alif’s smile says it all—there’s nothing quite like the feeling of a successful trek ending with a heavy weight on the end of your line. Gear up with Senses and go find your own hidden honey hole! 🎒🐟

The fish in the image is a Hampala Barb (also known as the Jungle Perch). Here are the essential details:

• Scientific Name: Hampala macrolepidota.

• Appearance: Easily identified by its large, silver scales, a prominent black vertical bar on its flank, and bright red/orange fins with black borders.

• Behavior: Known as the "Jungle Pirate," it is a fierce predator that hunts in schools. It is famous for "boiling" the water surface when chasing baitfish.

• Habitat: It thrives in clear, fast-moving tropical rivers and pristine jungle streams with rocky or sandy bottoms.

• Angling Profile: It is one of the hardest-fighting freshwater fish for its size. It is known for a violent, bone-jarring strike and a powerful initial run toward underwater structures to snap the line.

Quick tips 🎣

I. The Target Fish: Jungle Perch

The fish captured is a Jungle Perch (often referred to as a river hunter). It is a highly aggressive species known for its explosive "hit and run" strikes.

• Behavior: They are ambush predators. They sit in the "slack water" (the calm spots) right next to fast-moving currents, waiting for the water to wash insects or smaller baitfish toward them.

• The Strike: These fish strike with incredible speed. You must be prepared for a heavy "thump" on your line and set the hook immediately to ensure it penetrates their bony jaws.

II. Equipment Strategy: Senses Blackhell & Saviors 60S

The combination of a high-performance rod and a sinking minnow is the ultimate setup for this environment.

• The Rod (Senses Blackhell): This rod is designed with a fast-action tip. This is crucial for "twitching" the lure with precision and having the "backbone" (strength in the lower half of the rod) to stop the fish from swimming into sharp rocks or underwater roots.

• The Lure (Senses Saviors 60s): This is a heavy sinking minnow. Because it is weighted, it allows for long, accurate casts even in windy conditions. Its slim profile slices through fast-moving water without spinning out of control.

III. Top Techniques for Success

• The "Twitch and Pause": Instead of a steady reel-in, use short, sharp snaps of your wrist to make the lure dart side-to-side. This mimics a wounded baitfish. Most hits occur the moment you stop moving the lure for a split second.

• Targeting "Eddies": Cast your lure past a large rock in the river. As the lure passes the "eddy" (the calm water behind the rock), increase your speed. The fish hiding in the shadow of that rock will see it as an escaping meal and strike.

• Fan Casting: Start by casting close to the bank, then gradually cast further out into the center of the river. This ensures you cover all possible hiding spots without spooking the fish closest to you.

IV. The Location: Tropical River Trails

• Stealth is Mandatory: In clear, shallow river water, fish can see you from a long distance. Approach the bank slowly and try to stay behind trees or tall grass to break up your silhouette.

• Water Conditions: If the water is rising or slightly muddy after rain, use lures with high-vibration or gold finishes. In crystal-clear water, stick to natural silver or transparent colors to avoid scaring the fish.

For the best results with your Senses Blackhell and Saviors 60s, use these two specialized lines for a perfect connection:

I. Senses Mojiko (Braided Main Line)

• The Technique: Use a thin diameter Mojiko braid (PE 0.8 – 1.2) to achieve maximum casting distance and decrease water resistance in fast currents.

• The Benefit: Its zero-stretch property allows you to feel the "vibration" of the Saviors 60s perfectly, ensuring you detect the lightest touch from a fish instantly.

II. Senses Absorber (Fluorocarbon Leader)

• The Technique: Tie a 1.5-meter leader of Senses Absorber (12lb – 20lb) to your main line using an FG Knot.

• The Benefit: As the name suggests, it acts as a "shock absorber" during violent strikes. Its high abrasion resistance protects your line from snapping when the fish drags it against sharp river rocks or submerged logs.

To catch the Jungle Perch, timing and weather are everything. Here are the best conditions for a successful session:

1. Best Time of Day

• Dawn and Dusk (The Golden Hours): This is the peak feeding time. They move from deep cover into the shallows to hunt baitfish. Look for "boils" or splashes on the surface.

• Mid-day: Usually slower, but you can still trigger a strike by casting the Saviors 60s deep into the shade of overhanging trees or behind large boulders.

2. Ideal Weather Conditions

• Approaching Storms: The "pre-frontal" period (when the sky turns dark and the air pressure drops) is the best. Fish sense the change and feed aggressively before the rain hits.

• The Early Monsoon: Rising water levels from the first big rains of the season trigger their migration upstream to spawn. This is when the largest trophy fish are often caught.

• Post-Rain: Once the water starts to clear but remains slightly "tea-colored," visibility is lower, making the fish less cautious and more likely to strike your lure.

3. Quick Tip for Success

Avoid fishing during heavy, cold downpours or immediately after a cold front. The sudden drop in water temperature makes these tropical fish lethargic and less likely to chase a fast-moving lure.

Recommended setup

I. Alternative Rod: Senses Viking (Finesse Series)

While the Blackhell is a powerhouse, the Senses Viking is the go-to for Finesse Casting.

• Why use it: It is lighter and designed for ultra-accurate, short-range "flick" shots. In tight jungle streams where you have very little room to swing, the Viking allows you to place your lure into tiny pockets with extreme precision.

II. Alternative Lures: The Deep & Surface Killers

If the fish are not hitting the Saviors 60s, switch to these two options:

• Senses Kaido Shad (Heavy Sinking): This is a deeper-diving shad. Use this when the water is high or when the large fish are sitting at the bottom of deep waterfall pools. It has a wider "wobble" compared to the Saviors' tight vibration.

• Senses Kaiko 62 (Popper): If you see fish chasing bait on the surface, use this popper. It creates a loud "blooping" sound that draws Jungle Perch out from under thick logs for a spectacular surface strike.

III. Professional Line Setup

Stick with the high-performance ABX and Senses combination, but adjust the specs for a stealthier approach:

• Main Line: Senses Mojiko PE 0.6 — Going slightly thinner than the picture setup allows for even longer casts with lighter lures.

• Leader: Senses Absorber (10lb - 12lb) — In crystal-clear water, using a thinner ABX leader makes your lure look more natural, which is key for "smart" fish that have been caught before.

IV. Simple Technique Change

Instead of the "fast twitch" used with the Saviors, try a "Slow Roll" with the Kaido Shad. Throw it upstream and reel just fast enough to feel the lure vibrating. This mimics a tired fish drifting with the current—an easy meal for a big predator.

The Senses Saviors series, especially the Saviors 50s, is well-known for its effectiveness in attracting green and red mahseer in the market. Very few lures can successfully entice these elusive fish, but Saviors has consistently proven its capability.

Since the inception of the Saviors 50S, it has established a legendary status, yet it couldn't keep up with the relentless demand for lure casters looking to conquer big fish. To continue this legacy and achieve new milestones, Senses is expanding the Saviors series in October 2023 by introducing two new members: the SAVIORS 60S and the SAVIORS 70S. These lures have been enhanced in size, with the Saviors 60S measuring 60mm in length and weighing 8.5g, while the Saviors 70S boasts a length of 70mm and a weight of 13.5g. The treble hook has also been upgraded, and they feature an extended lip design, providing excellent obstacle avoidance capabilities. This design allows them to maintain a consistent depth, covering a broader search area. With these improvements, water coverage in the extended Saviors series now reaches approximately 90%. You can easily dominate your fishing endeavors from now on.

Don't miss out on these exciting additions to the Saviors series! They are perfect for exploring deeper water pools and navigating the vicinity of waterfalls, expanding your search capabilities beyond what the Saviors 50S and Saviors 52S could achieve.
